From Old Laptop to Digital Picture Frame

Posted on June 7th, 2004

Robert Scoble linked to this today: Building a picture frame -- The "junk"-top revival. The project starts out with a "old" laptop and reengineers it into a nice looking picture frame, complete with what looks like specially-made picture frame software that runs on Windows. And by reengineer, I mean cutting, screwing, trips to Radio Shack, and contemplations of the best and cheapest materials to use for the frame.

I only have one question. How do you look at a machine like this:

  • 1.2MHz Pentium III mobile processor
  • 256MB of RAM
  • decent working flawlessly and quiet hard drive
  • CD/DVD ROM drive and SD flash memory reader
  • 1400 x 1050 resolution
  • Built in 802.11b wireless

and think, sure, that's a machine that is past its prime, that's a perfect candidate for repurposing?
